Manager, Billing and Coding

Department: Billing Reports To: Director, Revenue Cycle

FLSA: Exempt

Job Purpose:

The Manager, Billing and Coding is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the coding department, including monitoring staff work quality, efficiency, and productivity. The Manager, Billing and Coding is also responsible for performing coding audits, new product and procedure evaluation from a coding perspective, and ensuring coding compliance.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Monitors workflow and productivity of coding team to ensure work quality and effectiveness implementing process changes as needed to maximize efficiencies

Audits coding work to ensure compliance to established policies, procedures and applicable regulations

Provides expert level coding knowledge to the team and organization as needed

Approves claim adjustments per policy

Provides ongoing feedback and performance management to assigned team

Leads recruitment efforts and analyzes workload to ensure appropriate staffing levels

Manages training and onboarding of new coding staff

Works cross-functionally with other departments in the organization providing coding expertise and guidance

Communicates coding and organizational changes with staff members

Assists in the evaluation of new and changing procedures to ensure accurate coding

Orders supplies and resources as needed, such as coding tools, books, publications, and webinars

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.

A minimum of four years of experience medical coding and billing experience

A minimum of two years of experience managing people

Environmental/Working Conditions:

Working environment is in an office/clinic setting.

Physical/Mental Demands:

Sit for extended periods of time.

Possess full range of motion in shoulders and arms, including reaching above or below the shoulder.

Requires lifting, carrying and/or moving objects in a manner consistent with most office environments (generally, no more than 10 pounds on a frequent basis and 20 pounds on an occasional basis).

Finger dexterity for typing on a keyboard and using a mouse for extended periods of time.
